Tenants Got Talent Builds Confidence and Connection at Cliftonville Road

Inspired by a shared love of reality talent shows, people supported at Praxis Care’s Cliftonville Road service took centre stage in their very own “Tenants Got Talent” competition and BBQ.
Created by Support Worker Rachel Johnston, the event gave individuals an opportunity to showcase their talents, celebrate their interests, and enjoy a day filled with entertainment, friendship and community spirit.
Rachel came up with the idea after noticing how much several people supported by the service enjoyed watching talent competitions on television. Singing and dancing had already become a regular part of life within the house, often helping to make daily tasks more enjoyable and less overwhelming. The talent show provided the perfect opportunity for everyone to share something they loved in a supportive and encouraging environment.
The event began with an opening ceremony before participants took to the stage to perform. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a finger-food buffet and BBQ before gathering for an awards ceremony, where each participant received a certificate, trophy and sweets in recognition of their efforts.
Celebrating Individual Talents
The competition highlighted the unique strengths and interests of everyone involved.
Daniel’s Story
Daniel, who is non-verbal and primarily communicates through his artwork, entered a glow-in-the-dark bead creation that he had carefully completed in advance of the event. His artwork was proudly presented to the judges as his talent entry.
Laoise’s Story
Laoise chose to sing, overcoming her initial nerves with encouragement from fellow tenants. Her performance became a valuable confidence-building experience.
Holly’s Story
Holly delighted the audience with a personalised version of Barbie Girl, rewriting the song to reflect her own personality and interests. Her creative and unexpected performance quickly became one of the highlights of the day.
Everyone had an opportunity to take part, whether as a performer, judge or enthusiastic audience member. The event encouraged self-expression, confidence building and social connection while celebrating each person’s individuality.
Making a Lasting Difference
Reflecting on the success of the event, Rachel said:
“Having the ‘Tenants Got Talent’ event gave the space for the tenants to show their unique talents while being celebrated and supported by the other tenants and staff. The event has now made its way onto our annual calendar of events. It was our way to celebrate the amazing talents we have the pleasure of seeing every day.”
Building Confidence Through Participation
“It was good. I was so proud of myself for facing my fears. I enjoyed it all.” – Holly
“I loved performing Mamma Mia. I was nervous to perform but when everyone clapped their hands I felt better. My favourite part was the dancing and that everyone helped me when I was nervous by clapping their hands and cheering me on!” – Laoise
Rachel also reflected on the lasting impact the event had on relationships within the house:
“The bond afterwards was great. They all got to know each other’s interests and it made their companionship stronger. Everyone felt a little bit more accepted for who they were and what they enjoyed, and it really broke down those barriers.”
Looking Ahead
Now established as an annual event, Tenants Got Talent continues to celebrate individuality, build confidence and strengthen connections among the people supported at Cliftonville Road.
