From staying in his room to living more independently… 🌟

In just one year at Praxis Care, Lauren Baker has opened up the world to a person she supports living in West Belfast - earning her a place as a finalist for The Newcomer Award at the National Learning Disability & Autism Awards.

When Lauren first began supporting the individual, he spent much of his time in his room and relied heavily on staff for daily tasks.

Through simple changes, like introducing picture-based planners to map out daily routines, Lauren helped make everyday tasks clearer, more manageable, and less overwhelming.

Over time, that support has led to real, lasting change. He now comes out of his room independently, prepares his own breakfast, keeps his space clean, and even pays for his own taxis. His confidence has grown socially too, attending events like a monthly dance night at the Black Box. Lauren says:

“Being part of so many aspects of their lives, supporting their progress, and helping them build greater independence and a better quality of life is what makes this role so enjoyable and rewarding. Over the past year with Praxis Care, I’ve gained invaluable experience and a real understanding of just how important the role of a support worker is. ”

💙 Join us in congratulating Lauren on this fantastic and well-deserved achievement.

One of the biggest challenges anyone can face is the loss of someone close to them.

For Frank, that loss has been part of a much wider journey - one that includes finding ways to manage his mental health, including living with bipolar disorder.

Over the past two years, Frank has faced significant challenges, having lost his mother during COVID and, more recently, a close friend. It hasn’t always been easy, but what stands out is how he has continued to move forward, step by step.

With the right support, including a Positive Behaviour Plan and medication that works for him, Frank has focused on building a life that supports his wellbeing. He has embraced learning in ways that show just how far he has come, from reading and writing his own stories to engaging in maths and exploring new interests online.

Kenia Power, Manager at our Rosslare service, says:

“He has also found real comfort in creative activities. Frank is very skilled at creating small knitted handbags, carefully knitting each piece before sewing them together and adding handles to complete the finished product. He takes great pride in his work and enjoys the sense of achievement that comes from creating something with his own hands.”

Spending time with others has also played an important role in his journey. Frank enjoys outings, holidays, and equine therapy, as well as time with his family and peers.

Processing grief hasn’t been easy, but Frank has found his own way through it. Visiting his friend’s grave has helped him come to terms with his loss. Even when dealing with medication side effects and physical health challenges, he continues to handle things with dignity and determination.

As Kenia explains:

“Seeing Frank remain positive, engaged, and able to find enjoyment in life despite the losses he has experienced has been truly inspiring and demonstrates how far he has come.”

Today, Frank is living a more balanced, independent, and meaningful life. His journey is not defined by the challenges he has faced, but by the way he has responded to them, with resilience, commitment, and a determination to keep going.

It’s this that has earned him the Health and Wellbeing Award at Praxis Care’s Republic of Ireland Celebrating Success Awards.

Frank, your strength and positivity are an inspiration to everyone around you. 🌟

From “maybe one day” to first holidays abroad… 🌟

Denise Callaghan, one of our Team Leaders in Derry, has helped turn moments people never thought possible into reality - supporting individuals to experience first flights, first holidays abroad, and memories that will stay with them for life.

From a trip to Disneyland to a once-in-a-lifetime cruise, she’s helped turn “maybe one day” into something real.

Her impact doesn’t go unnoticed. As one senior colleague at Praxis Care put it:
“Denise doesn’t simply meet expectations - she exceeds them in every possible way.”

Denise has now been shortlisted for The Making a Difference Award at the National Learning Disability & Autism Awards, following her recent win as Domiciliary Carer of the Year at the Nursing & Care Awards 2026.

All of this comes during what has been a very difficult year for Denise personally, following the loss of her mum. Even through that, she has continued to show up for others with the same warmth, care and energy she’s known for - making sure the people around her feel supported and valued every day.

💙 Join us in congratulating Denise on this incredibly well-deserved recognition.

Catherine is the Acting Manager for our Physical Disabilities Service in the Isle of Man and has dedicated 12 years to working in care. No two days are the same - but you’ll always find Catherine supporting her team, keeping quality and compliance on track, managing rotas, and ensuring the people we support receive truly person-centred care in a safe, positive environment. And of course, there’s always time for a game of bingo! 🎉

Catherine has been recognised for the incredible impact she’s making within her service. She has championed co-production by personally attending outreach review meetings and helping to organise Thie Quinney’s very first meeting led by the people we support.

The result? A fantastic turnout, brilliant engagement, and a space where everyone felt heard - sharing ideas for fundraising and service improvements. One person even said the meeting left them feeling “buoyant for the day” 💬✨

To celebrate, Catherine was surprised with flowers and chocolates - and Louise, who lives at the service, was just as excited as we were! 🌸🍫

Catherine says:

“Care can be challenging at times, but it can also be one of the most rewarding jobs you can do. It’s incredibly motivating knowing you are truly making a difference to someone’s life.”

Catherine, you’re amazing - we’re lucky to have you! Thank you for everything 💜

Since opening in 2006, our Swan House and Meenalig service in Navan has provided a home for adults with additional needs, as one of the first Praxis Care houses in the Republic of Ireland.

Over the last 20 years the service has grown and adapted in line with evolving legislation, ensuring that quality of care is underpinned by human rights.

The service currently supports 10 people across two houses, with some residents having lived here for 20 years. The residents are supported with individualised goals, community connections ensuring people feel safe and are supported to thrive.

One resident Benson, who moved to Swan house last year has already made great personal goals and feels comfortable and settled in his new home.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Benson moved to Ireland as a child, growing up in Dublin before later living with his sister and her family in Navan.

Since joining Swan House, Benson has grown in confidence and independence, making more of his own choices and openly expressing his preferences and rights - something that has had a meaningful impact on his self-esteem and overall wellbeing.

Rachel Malone, Manager at the Praxis Care service, says:

“You really see it in the everyday moments. He’s more settled, more confident, and starting to do more for himself.”

“These days, his mornings often start quietly, with a cup of coffee while he checks on his greenhouse in our sensory garden – a space he really enjoys. Gardening has always been his thing, and now he finally has the space to enjoy it properly. Trips to the garden centre are a highlight.”

Benson takes great pride in his home. Photos of his family line the walls, keeping that sense of connection close to him every day.

Rachel adds:

“He’s naturally quite quiet, but he’s built good relationships here and is getting more involved. He’s joined the Arch Club and is now working towards some volunteer work. The staff are so proud of him.”

"It hasn’t been one big change - it’s been lots of small ones, over time, that have really added up.

"That’s what it often looks like - small, everyday progress that really matters.”

And it’s the kind of support that’s been part of Swan House and Meenalig in Navan for the past 20 years. Join us in celebrating 20 years of Swan House and Meenalig - supporting people, every day, in ways that really matter.

A blood cancer diagnosis at 33 changed everything for Martyna Konecka. What she did next might surprise you.

Martyna is a Personal Assistant at Praxis Care - and after her treatment, she chose to give back by volunteering as a befriender. She explains:

“After I finished my treatment, lots of things changed for me, and I thought it would be nice to give something back. Your priorities change - how you spend your time feels more important than ever. I just wanted to do something that is good for me and for someone else.”

Inspired by someone close to her, Martyna decided to become a befriender with Praxis Care:

“A family member of mine has autism, they are one of the people I’m closest to. They are just the best person on this planet. We always meet up, go window shopping and just talk, and I thought, well that’s exactly what I would be doing volunteering for Praxis Care.

“I remember telling them I was going to become a befriender and they said ‘you’ll be very good at it, you’ve had a lot of practice!’”

Now, Martyna is building a connection with the young person she supports:

“We’ve met a couple of times and it’s going really well. We’re getting to know each other. They love animals and farms, so next time we’re heading to Belfast Zoo.

“We have a laugh. It’s so nice to be there for someone - and I get to visit farms and hold baby chicks too! It’s a bit like having a little sister.”

Martyna’s advice for anyone thinking about befriending:

“Don’t overthink it or worry. Just be yourself, build a relationship, and enjoy it.”

Today marks a bittersweet moment as we bid farewell to Amanda Gray, an exceptional senior leader who has dedicated eight years to Praxis Care.

Amanda joined us as Head of Development, before progressing to Regional Director, and most recently Director of Care and Development for the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain over the past three years. During her time with us, she played a significant role in expanding our services into the West of Ireland, helping us reach and support more individuals, families and communities.

What truly sets Amanda apart is how she shows up for people. She has been a passionate advocate for those we support and for our staff. She is known for her visibility across services - spending time with teams, connecting with families, and building meaningful relationships with the people we support. She leads from the front, and that has made a lasting impact.

Jessica, one of the people we support, shared: “She is very kind and always looked after me in Swan House.”

Luke, another resident, said: “Amanda is a very nice person with a big heart who looks after everyone in Praxis Care.”

These reflections capture the difference Amanda has made to so many.

Amanda, thank you for your leadership, your commitment, and the care you have shown across Praxis Care over the past eight years. You will be greatly missed.

We wish you every success for the future.

Please join us in celebrating Amanda and all she has contributed.
