As part of our annual Staff Awards celebrations, we took the opportunity to speak with some of our incredible winners to learn more about their journeys, what the recognition means to them, and the impact of their work at Praxis Care.
In this edition, we’re delighted to introduce John Collins, a dedicated Team Leader at Woodvale Residential Service in Donegal, who is a valuable member of the team who were honoured with the Outstanding Teamwork award.
The Woodvale team was recognised for their exceptional teamwork and commitment to person-centred support, enabling a resident with a history of high-risk behaviour to make a remarkable transition to a new home in Donegal. Through consistent, collaborative care and a focus on solutions, the team has helped reduce restrictive practices and incidents, while empowering the resident to fully engage in daily life and community activities.
What did it mean to your team to win the award?
It meant a lot to all of us, we go into work every day and do our best for the people we support. To get recognised was very rewarding in itself. Winning the award gave everyone a real boost, and reminded us how proud we are of the work we do together.
How did your team celebrate winning?
We had a celebration on the night of the awards, with plenty of food and laughter. I enjoyed a nice glass of red to enjoy the moment. It was really nice to stop and appreciate what we achieved as a team.
Can you tell us about your day-to-day role in Praxis Care?
My current role as a Team Leader is about keeping things running smoothly, supporting both the staff and the people we support, while leading by example. I help out wherever I’m needed – whether that’s care, sorting paperwork, updating documentation. No two days are the same, but that’s what I like about it.
How did you get into a career in care?
To be honest, I fancied a new challenge and wanted to do something meaningful. Once I started in care, I knew straight away it was the right move. It’s a continuing learning process and hard work at times, but its also really rewarding – you get to make a difference every day.
What motivates you to keep going in your role on tough days?
Definitely the people – both the people we support and the team. Seeing a smile and a bit of progress, or just knowing you’ve helped someone that day keeps you going. We all support each other, which makes it all that bit easier.
What would you say to someone who is thinking of starting a career in care?
I’d say go for it, but go in with the right attitude. You’ll meet all sorts of people, most bring a positive, helpful attitude that makes the job enjoyable and teamwork strong. Occasionally, you might come across someone with a more negative outlook, but that reminds you how important it is to stay focused on the residents and support each other, and rely on proper guidance from senior management. Overall, it’s a job full of purpose, learning, and great people.
