“As soon as I walked in, I felt this was the place for me.”
Returning to Care
Louise Meggett, Support Worker at Balleysleih Day Service has always been drawn to supporting others. She began her career in care as a teenager, later stepping away to raise her children and work in schools.
“I loved being around people, having a chat with the residents, and making their day a little brighter,” she remembers. Later, when her children were a bit older, she returned to care, taking on roles with different providers.
Louise first joined Praxis Care as an agency worker and is now a contracted member of the team. “I was here so often that when a six-month contract came up, I decided to apply – and I was lucky to get it,” she says. “It’s lovely being here – everyone’s so friendly, and it just feels right.”
Making Everyday Moments Special
Louise particularly enjoys the variety this role gives her, whether it’s supporting activities in the service, or heading out into the community. “Every day is different, and that makes the work really rewarding.”
“Because I’m a driver, we can get out and about – visiting local shops, cafes, or just having a picnic in the summer. The residents always have a choice in what they want to do – some days they just want to relax, and that’s fine too.”
She also values the everyday activities that help build skills and confidence. “It’s about giving the people we support the chance to be involved because it’s their building and their space. It’s not just about being in their homes or doing tasks – it’s about creating experiences and seeing them enjoy themselves.”
Advice for Future Care Workers
For anyone considering a career in care, Louise is clear: “Go for it. It can be hard, but it’s incredibly rewarding. You make a difference in ways you might not even realise at the time.” She believes the key qualities are simple but essential, “You just have to be someone who listens and offers support when it’s needed. You can learn the rest on the job.”
Reflecting on joining Praxis Care, “As soon as I walked in, I felt this was the place for me. I believe everything happens for a reason, and I was meant to come here.”
