Making Waves in the Community: Aura Leisure Recognised as Community Care Champion by Praxis Care

Aura Drogheda Leisure Centre has been named Praxis Care’s latest Community Champion, in recognition of the welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment it provides for the people we support.

For many people supported by Praxis Care in Drogheda, Aura Leisure Centre has become a valued part of their weekly routine. Cormac and Shane enjoy swimming lengths together during open swim sessions, while Christopher and John look forward to aqua aerobics classes and the opportunity to socialise with other members. The centre’s jacuzzi is also a firm favourite, offering a chance to relax and unwind after their activities.

Regular access to leisure facilities like Aura can have a significant impact on the lives of people with disabilities. Participation in sport and recreation helps build confidence, improve physical wellbeing and strengthen social connections, while creating opportunities for people to participate fully in their local community.

Denise Gillespie, Activity Facilitator at Praxis Care’s Drogheda Day Service, who nominated Aura Leisure for the award, said:

“Aura Leisure Centre has become an important part of the lives of the people we support. While the facilities are excellent, it is the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that truly stands out. Staff take the time to get to know people, greet them by name and ensure everyone feels valued. Most importantly, they see the person, not the disability, and treat each individual with dignity, respect and kindness.”

The recognition highlights the vital role community organisations play in supporting people with disabilities to lead active, connected and fulfilling lives. Too often, barriers can prevent people from accessing sports and recreational opportunities. Aura Leisure Centre demonstrates how inclusive organisations can make a real difference by creating environments where everyone feels welcomed, supported and able to participate. Their commitment to inclusion helps make community life more accessible for all.
