“Its exciting and I’m proud to be here. I wouldn’t change anything!”
John has been part of the Praxis Care community for over 20 years. Since 2002, he’s been living in supported accommodation in Newtownards and attending Conlig Day Service. He’s proud of the life he’s built with support from Praxis Care – a life filled with purpose, independence and friendship.
Living Life His Way
With the support of staff, John enjoys a busy routine and a range of hobbies that keep him active and connected. “I enjoy fishing and playing golf at the driving range. I enjoy playing football – we used to have a football team here, but now I’m involved in walking football.”
John is proud to play an active role in shaping his daily life and the support he receives. He takes great satisfaction in doing his own weekly grocery shopping and planning his meals, “I enjoy going shopping to get my groceries and plan my menu for the week.” He’s also been directly involved in the recruitment of support staff for services, giving him a voice in choosing the people who’ll work in the services he uses, “I have been on panels to interview staff that want to work here, which I like doing.”
A Job to Be Proud Of
John is a key member of the team at the Conlig Day Service gardens and nursey – a role he takes great pride in. “At Conlig gardens, I enjoy weeding and cutting the grass, along with planting new plants and getting the planters ready to sell. I also enjoy helping the public when they come to the gardens.”
He values the positive atmosphere created by other attendees and support staff at gardens. “The staff here are nice to work with and they’re kind. We have a great manager here at the day service, I wouldn’t change anything here! I’m proud of having a job and having a place to go that I enjoy.”
Recent Achievements
In recent years, John has proudly been involved with the Special Olympics, “I’m involved with the Special Olympics – I’ve volunteered there and competed in badminton.”
This summer, John was part of a group from the Conlig service that took part in the Balmoral Show with their very own market stand. They sold planters, plants, and baked goods – all made or grown through their work in the gardens at the day service. It was a proud moment for everyone involved, showcasing their skills, creativity, and teamwork to the public. “I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to go back next year

Looking Ahead
Conlig Day Services are getting ready for their official 30th birthday celebrations, which John is looking forward to. “In the future we have our 30th anniversary coming up here – I’m looking forward to help with organising the party and organising the jumble sale.”
John enjoys going on holiday with his friend Harry, they are heading to Donegal this autumn, but have plans to go further afield next year. “I enjoy going on holidays with my friend Harry and we’re planning a trip to Benidorm.”
When asked what he’d like people to know about him, and others who use services like Praxis Care, “I would tell people that it is exciting and I’m proud to be here. I love when customers come to the gardens and I can help them.”
