Details of a new service were presented at the Praxis Care Quality Conference recently.
Caroline Harper, the Manager at Kilmorey House & Connaught House Newry, presented to over 120 delegates at the 2018 Praxis Care Quality Conference in Antrim on 8 November. Caroline presented on “Experiential Learning” and described how her team developed new skills and inter-agency partnerships to put in place a new service for individuals with complex needs from the Southern Trust Forensic Learning Disability Team.
The service has been in place from February 2017 and has bespoke packages of support for people with a history of offending, drug and alcohol mis-use and repeated admissions. Good outcomes have been demonstrated and commissioners are very pleased with the service.
Caroline attributes their success to good use of reflective practice, support for staff and teamwork. Dr Adrian East, Forensic Psychiatrist for the service also spoke at the Conference and gave very positive feedback on the new service. He feels services like this are more widely needed and could be developed further with staff getting more training particularly in reflective practice, crisis prevention and mitigation therapies.
