There were celebrations last week in Newtownards as local social care worker Kathryn Coey was crowned winner of the Outstanding Contribution Award at the prestigious Northern Ireland Learning Disability and Autism Awards. The awards celebrate excellence in support for people with learning disabilities and pay tribute to individuals and organisations who excel in providing quality care.
Kathryn has been a cornerstone of Praxis Care’s Kimberley House Supported Living Service team for over 12 years, supporting adults with learning disabilities in the heart of Newtownards. Her work has helped shape the service into a vibrant, inclusive community where dignity, creativity and joy are central to everyday life.
From organising unforgettable trips to designing personalised spaces, Kathryn’s initiatives have brought people together and made lasting memories. Her leadership in developing a bespoke induction programme for new staff has also strengthened the service, ensuring high-quality care for years to come.
Kimberley House Supported Living Service offers community-based housing for adults with learning disabilities and behaviours that may be challenging, with 24/7 support, residents are encouraged to live as independently as possible. The service is delivered in partnership with Choice Housing, and both the Belfast and South Eastern Trusts.
When asked how she felt about winning, Kathryn said, “To win this award is just unbelievable, I’m extremely grateful. Being part of the Kimberley House team and supporting all of our residents is a huge part of my life. Knowing they are happy is what it’s all about and I will continue doing all I can to better and improve their lives.
I just want to take this opportunity to thank the people we support, my manager Nikki McMullan, the entire staff team in Kimberley House and all of my colleagues within Praxis Care. Without you all this nomination and recognition would not be possible. Finally, I would like to congratulate all of the other winners and nominees – thank you once again.”

Service Manager, Nikki McMullan said, “The passion and dedication that Kathryn displays to the people she supports is inspiring. She is such a valued and highly thought of member of the team, and an active mentor for all staff – they look up to within their roles.
Her person centred approach and knowledge of the people she supports is next to none. She works alongside the individuals and community teams to promote their empowerment and development within their own home. We are so proud of what she has achieved and there is no one more deserving of this award.”
