Celebrating Gerry: Our Employee of the Month
At Praxis Care, our people make a difference every day, and we’re proud to recognise those who go above and beyond in their roles. In July, we celebrated Gerry, whose positive attitude, compassion, and commitment to supporting the people in his care have earned him the title of Employee of the Month.
Making a Difference Every Day
Gerry is a valued Support Worker at one of our supported living services in Belfast, where he is known for his kindness, dedication, and genuine commitment to the people he supports.
By building strong, trusting relationships and taking the time to listen, Gerry helps people feel heard and respected. His person-centred approach and willingness to support others, no matter how big or small the task, have made a real difference to the lives of those around him.
An Unexpected Celebration
When Gerry learned he had been named Employee of the Month, the news came as a complete surprise.
“I felt shocked when I received communication that I had won. Out of everyone who works at Praxis, I was baffled that I had won.”
While Gerry may not have expected the recognition, his colleagues certainly saw the impact of his work. Their appreciation made the award even more meaningful.
“It was nice to see that people appreciated my efforts and were happy for me.”
A Leap of Faith into Social Care
Interestingly, Gerry’s journey into care wasn’t a traditional one. Before joining Praxis Care, he spent most of his working life in the motor trade.
Following the Covid-19 pandemic, Gerry decided he was ready for a new challenge. Encouraged by a friend already working at Praxis Care, he applied for a role and hasn’t looked back since.
“I took a chance and it worked out for me because now I can say I enjoy coming to work.”
Importance of Self-Care
One of the lessons Gerry has learned is the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Outside of work, he enjoys walking, using it as a way to unwind and recharge after a shift.
“I go for a walk after my shift ends, just so I’m not carrying work worries home with me, so that my time off feels like time off and to prevent burnout.”

“This career is rewarding and changes your perspective on life in a positive way. It’s more than a job role; you get to make a genuine difference in people’s lives for the better. It teaches you patience and compassion. There may be challenges, but the good days make up for it.”
